Matthew 5-15

  1. I'm rather sorry to see no new posts, would love to hear about what others are learning... One final one for me, I don't want this to become a personal journal but my handwritten notes are many, I'm soaking it all in and am grateful for this particular challenge.
Matt 6:4,6,18 impressed on me that God SEES, in secret - no one else needs to know, he sees and he knows our motives - he sees, he affirms, this comforts me and it's enough. for a person like me who has had a lifelong need for "honest words of affirmation" from others, this is a biggie.
Matt 6:32 the father KNOWS and he cares and will supply for my needs - again - such comfort to me!
Today I read Matt 8 and the key thing that stood out to me was Jesus on faith - he healed because of it, he was amazed when he saw it in the obedience and humility of the centurion, he was disappointed when it was lacking in those closest to him
in Matt 8:23-27 Jesus rebuked the winds and the waves and they calmed immediately, he rebuked the disciples - and what happened? they were amazed and asked what kind of man is this, but did their hearts calm, did they get it? Matthew remembers the incident well and recorded it but gives us no personal comments. Begs me to ask the question - what makes me afraid? Do I have the faith that Jesus will be true to his promise and in his presence my "waves and winds" will calm? Many times in my life I've let them toss me badly. My prayer and desire is that faith will continue to grow in me so that I will respond quicker and more naturally because of who I know him to be.

  2. As I read these chapters, Jesus' words are asking some hard things of me... "no one can serve two masters"... "who do you serve?"... the recognition of the Centurion of Jesus' authority... do I live with that same sense of the authority of Jesus? Or I was reminded when Jesus says, "Foxes have holes (Herod and the Jewish establishment who were perceived sellouts to the Roman empire) and birds (the Romans were often associated with the eagle) have nests but the Son of man has no place to lay his head" that Jesus calls us to engage the world around us on very different terms... in what ways is my life this type of "engaged dis-engagement" from living life according to the culture around me? Just some random responses on the journey... Glenn
